5 Reasons to Travel With Your Kids and Without Your Spouse!

By Eric Cohen September 14, 2016
When I was in High School my dad took me skiing in Colorado. Just the two of us. It's one of my best memories of him. It was a once in a lifetime experience for us, as it was the only time we vacationed just the two of us. I've been fortunate to travel one-on-one with each of my kids and it's created many unique shared memories. And this is a trend that gaining steam...dads traveling with their kids to share things together.

There are many reasons to travel as pair, here a few of my top ones:

1. Kids will open up and talk and share more than they will at home. According to a recent survey by Homewood Suites, 92% of fathers agree with this. I certainly do as I've leaned things about each of my kids that I never would have if we had not hit the road.

2. You can teach your kids something. It doesn't have to be the greatest wisdom, but you can share something you know whether a skill or life lesson. On a trip with my son, we went back to our car in a parking garage that was kind of sketchy. I taught him about being aware of his surroundings, the people and possible dangers. Don't be scared, but be alert and ready to take action. That alone will prevent a lot of incidents.

3. It can become a tradition. If you find something you really enjoy, it can become an annual tradition. Following your home team to a new city to catch a game is a neat idea. Or an annual camping trip, roller coaster bonanza, or ski trip all will create memories that can last a lifetime.

4. It can be more affordable. A vacation for a family of four can be quite an investment. Hotels, park tickets, airfare, meals and more for four can exceed $10,000 at many resorts and destinations. However, a road trip for two can be done for a fraction of that. And when the day is spent engaging in your favorite activities, all you'll want is a nice clean room to crash in that night.

5. You'll avoid family tension. The more people planning the trip, the more needs have to be taken into account. You want to go to an amusement park, your wife wants to go to the beach. The younger kids want to see a princess, while the older ones want to wakeboard. It's tough to please everyone. But when you go dad and daughter, there's only two of you to please and it gets much easier.

If you take the plunge, you'll find your own reasons. Stars small, maybe with just an overnight, or weekend road trip. From there, who knows, the world is your oyster!
